Studio Concrete presents Grim Park’s solo exhibition 《虎路, Becoming a Tiger 〈SEOUL〉》 from January 26 to March 27, 2022.

Becoming a Tiger—literally meaning “the path of the tiger”—refers to the artist’s journey to overcome his own self-loathing through both the tangible aesthetics of the tiger’s form and the intangible aesthetics of its valor, as the tiger serves as Park’s artistic persona. This exhibition also encapsulates his will to metaphorically “kill” his self-loathing self and be reborn, embracing the Buddhist concept of reincarnation. When viewed chronologically, Park’s body of work gradually shifts from idealized portrayals of others to increasingly direct representations of himself—signaling both an autobiographical overcoming and a longing to be reborn as the artist Grim Park within the art world.

This exhibition presents a four-year journey beginning in 2018 and continuing to the present. It is organized around key series including: Seeking the TigerIgnorance–Contemplation–SamādhiGreat Compassion Tiger, and most recently, the Mimi series. Each series explores a distinct theme—reincarnation, awakening, loving-kindness, and universal compassion.

Specifically, the Seeking the Tiger series captures the moment and history of the artist’s self rebirth as a dialectical consequence of the power dynamics between subject and other; Ignorance–Contemplation–Samādhi maps the meditative journey toward nirvana through deep self-realization; Great Compassion Tiger reflects the foundation of self-love that emerges from accepting the inherent imperfection of one’s human condition; and the Mimi series celebrates the aesthetic pleasures and tensions that arise in social relationships built upon such self-love.
