On Friday, the 3rd, Absolut Vodka announced the
winner of its “ABSOLUT ARTIST AWARDS,” a contest held as part of its global
campaign “CREATE A BETTER TOMORROW, TONIGHT.” Artist Grim Park was honored with
the final grand prize.
Absolut launched the “ABSOLUT ARTIST AWARDS” contest
with the intention of discovering creative Absolut artists and collaborating
with them to create a better society and future.
Driven by the belief that “everyone should be free
to choose whom they love,” Absolut set the contest’s theme as “EXPRESS LOVE
WITHOUT PREJUDICE,” providing artists a platform to freely express their
creativity regarding the topic of love.
Absolut selected artist Grim Park as the final
winner of the competition. Curator Eunjin Shin, a judge for the contest,
described Park as “an artist who portrays queer models from SNS subculture
through classical and traditional Buddhist painting methods, uniquely
expressing his ambivalent identity.” She added, “As a result of winning this
contest, he now qualifies to participate in the internationally held Create a
Better Tomorrow Absolut Global Creative Competition. We expect him to showcase
a new face of Korean art through this global challenge.”
Curator Shin also shared her thoughts on the judging
experience, stating, “It was an immense honor to share this award with three
artists (the three finalists), each showcasing their talents and individuality
under the theme of ‘love without prejudice.’”
Creative consultant and fellow judge Kyubeom Lee
commented on Grim Park and his work: “Grim Park’s method of self-expression is
highly unique. Through traditional Buddhist art, the messages and themes he
communicates delivered a shock not seen in existing works. His voice directed
at society was clear, and his artworks—especially those overcoming
self-hatred—were particularly beautiful.”
Grim Park submitted several paintings depicting
diverse male figures, including How Dare You? and Dirty?
Beauty!?. He expressed his hopes that “society might begin to view
queerness differently through my paintings.” On the contest’s theme, “Express
Love Without Prejudice,” he said, “I thought it was a great topic through which
I could share the message that queer love is ‘different,’ not ‘wrong.’” He
added, “I hope Absolut’s campaign has a positive influence on other companies
as well.”
His works immediately capture attention through the
vibrant colors and techniques of Buddhist art. A major in Buddhist painting,
Park stated, “I love Avalokiteśvara (the Bodhisattva of
Compassion),” and added, “Through my paintings, I hope many people will come
to have a heart as compassionate as Avalokiteśvara.”
Grim Park will join forces with Absolut, a brand
that has consistently pursued progress and innovation, to communicate its core
values and help bring about positive societal change. As the winner, he will
receive a prize of 10 million KRW, participate in a training program at
Absolut’s Brand Academy in Sweden, and represent Korea in the CREATE A BETTER
TOMORROW Absolut Global Creative Competition.
Fellow finalists Woosung Lee and Kyungmin Lee will
also continue to collaborate with Absolut. Woosung Lee presented installations
such as Kiss Kiss, The Times We Were
Happy, and Kiss Kiss (Neon), depicting joyful
moments shared with loved ones such as partners, family, friends, and
companions. Kyungmin Lee created the digital artwork SUPER
PRIDE–ABSOLUT LOVE, inspired by the shapes and colors of various
queer flags and incorporating the square-form alphabet “ABSOLUT LOVE.”
Absolut plans to collaborate with the finalists on
new bottle package designs.
Meanwhile, Absolut has long supported love without
prejudice—regardless of race, social background, age, or sexual orientation—and
has been backing the LGBT community since the 1980s. In Korea, Absolut also
showed its support and solidarity with the LGBT community by officially
sponsoring the Seoul Queer Culture Festival held on Saturday, July 14, at Seoul
Plaza.
