Artist An Gayoung, who has long explored the intersection of digital media, feminism, and art, has been awarded the “2022 Emerging Female Artist, 15th Gender Equality and Culture of the Year Award.

An has focused on how women continue to experience gender discrimination and misogyny even within digital environments such as games and the metaverse. She has concentrated on adapting gaming worldviews and storytelling structures, presenting works that seek alternatives from a feminist perspective. She has held solo exhibitions such as Iridium Age: Making New Kinships (2021), KIN Life (2019), and Hermes’ Box (2016), and has participated in numerous interdisciplinary art projects and curated exhibitions. She is currently an artist-in-residence at the MMCA Goyang Residency. Since September 1, she has been presenting the exhibition Cosmic Sense: XR Simulation for Future Humanity at the Coreana Museum of Art in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

At the award ceremony held on September 7 at KT&G Sangsang Madang Cinema in Mapo-gu, Seoul, An stated, “I’m happy to receive this award. I also feel a great sense of responsibility that comes with it. In 2019, I participated in a feminist study group with friends and fellow artists, where we drafted and published a manifesto online. I’ve tried not to just talk about practicing feminism but to prove it through various artistic activities.”

She also added, “I’m grateful that many people are enjoying my work, which deals with the representation of women in games and the metaverse. I hope to become an artist and creator who can inspire courage in younger and fellow artists.”

Now in its 15th year, the “Gender Equality and Culture of the Year Award” was established to honor cultural figures and cultural content that contribute to expanding women's participation in society, building a gender-equal society, and challenging fixed gender roles in everyday life. Established in 2008 by the Women & Culture Network, the award is given annually. It is hosted by Women’s News Inc. (President Hyosun Kim) and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Bogeun Park).

The “Emerging Female Artist” award is presented to a woman expected to be active in the fields of culture, art, and sports. The recipient is awarded a certificate from the president of Women’s News and a cash prize of KRW 1,000,000.
