If the boundaries between the virtual and the real were to vanish, allowing individuals to choose their own reality, then what would constitute reality—or truth? What defines the “individual user” in a world where one performs the state of “default”? Composed of a trilogy—SSUL, Z, and UNBOXING—the exhibition 《Default》 explores the state in which one must self-regulate reality in order to possess it. It defines a new user identity formed by the values of information collected as closely as possible to the real, within this condition of self-generated control.

The user’s gimmick is dead. Having exited a world without substance, the user is cast into a realm of re-modeling—a new reality, not merely a virtual one. In the realm of virtual accounts, there had been no rules; thus, the user must now seek new rules in the real. The user feels as if they’ve left their face behind in the substance-less world, and amid the question “Who am I, truly, in reality?” selects and performs their own “default” anew.
