While 《The Statue Knows How to Dance》(2021) introduced twelve wooden sculptures and paintings that reconstructed the dynamic movements of K-pop idols, 《Light Choreography》 showcased thirteen new paper sculptures and cut-out works that depict similar K-pop dance gestures, this time using paper as the primary material.

Rhee Donghoon has developed his own formal language by first carving wood in response to the grain and texture of the material to capture the motion of living subjects, and then reconfiguring these sculptural forms onto canvas in a second phase of translation.

This new series of paper works began with the artist’s curiosity: “How might the sculptural form transform when the material characteristics change?” By freely cutting, folding, and reshaping sheets of paper—and repeating processes of layering and attachment—he creates collaged sculptures. These works deliver a bright and rhythmic clarity, distinct from the dense physicality and weight of his earlier wooden sculptures and paintings.
