The Seoul Museum of Art (Director: Baik Ji-sook) presents the exhibition 《2020 Title Match: Yang Ah Ham vs. Dongjin Seo – To the Wavering》 from Tuesday, October 20, 2020 to Sunday, March 1, 2021, at Buk-Seoul Museum of Art.

Since 2014, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art has organized the Title Match exhibition series, inviting two artists each year to explore new possibilities of competition, dialogue, and collaboration through experimental exhibition formats. For the first time, the 2020 edition brings together not two artists, but an artist (Yang Ah Ham) and a theorist (critic Dongjin Seo), pushing the exhibition’s structure a step further.

In this seventh Title Match exhibition titled To the Wavering, Yang Ah Ham and Dongjin Seo engage in a conversation around the theme “How do we interpret today?”, anchored in their shared interest in “temporality.” The title To the Wavering is borrowed from Bertolt Brecht’s poem To Those Who Waver. The exhibition aims to deliver a sense of possibility for a new future to those who live through unstable times, facing the structural violence of social systems and global-scale disasters.

In Exhibition Hall 1, Yang and Seo draw upon the concepts of “panorama” and “narrative” in their interpretation of the present. Yang Ah Ham presents two video works—her new work Undefined Panorama 3.0 (2020) and Nonsense Factory (2013)—which intricately examine the unconscious narratives embedded in individuals and society during an era of expanding chaotic energy. Through these works, she seeks to explore how balance might be regained between the individual and society.

Dongjin Seo, responding to Yang’s works, presents his new piece Memory–International (2020). The work features selected scenes from past films that include flags, paired with text of varying rhythm and tone. It functions as a critical response to Yang’s attempts to analyze systemic issues and project a near future—reclaiming the narrative of a utopian past as a means to open up new future possibilities.

In Project Gallery 1, a video work titled Conversation is screened, which encapsulates a series of dialogues held between the two participants during the preparation period. The video offers insights into the exhibition’s key themes and concepts, as well as the attitudes and thoughts of the artist and theorist on a range of topics. Conversation is also available through the museum’s online platforms during the exhibition period.

Director Baik Ji-sook stated, “This Title Match featuring Yang Ah Ham and Dongjin Seo aims to showcase the solidarity they have built throughout the exhibition’s preparation, and the momentum that emerges from it.” She added, “As we live through a precarious present shaped by global disasters such as COVID-19, we hope this exhibition prompts viewers to reflect on how each of us can find our own path to balance.”
