Gangnam-gu (Mayor: Jeong Soon-gyun) and its affiliate Gangnam Cultural Foundation (Chairman: Choi Byung-sik) are presenting 《LOVE YOUR DEPOT_Gangnam Pavilion》 at Gungmaeul Park in Suseo-dong starting on the 18th.

《LOVE YOUR DEPOT_Gangnam Pavilion》 is a project carried out through a three-party agreement among Gangnam-gu, the Gangnam Cultural Foundation, and artist Jewyo Rhii. It is part of the public art initiative “Our Neighborhood Art,” planned to provide creators with opportunities for artistic production and local residents with access to culture in their daily lives.

LOVE YOUR DEPOT

“LOVE YOUR DEPOT” is an art storage system proposed by Jewyo Rhii in the Korea Artist Prize 2019 exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Arising from the question “Where do artworks go after an exhibition?”, the system values not only the artistic significance of works but also treats decisions over the life and value of artworks in a public, rather than market-driven, arena—thus extending their lives with practical value. Works at risk of disposal due to storage costs after exhibitions—often without sufficient opportunities for evaluation—are kept and displayed in neighborhood depots installed in everyday public spaces so anyone can view them. In addition, residents’ social-media activity after experiencing the works may generate new forms of value. In other words, it serves as a concrete and practical form of welfare for both artists who need storage space and residents seeking to enrich daily life through culture.

Turn Depot

The Turn Depot is both the storage core and the exhibition hall of the LOVE YOUR DEPOT project. Its floor rotates very slowly—about once every three minutes—so that visitors can stand in one place and view all stored works through windows set into the structure. To harmonize with the surroundings at residents’ request, the exterior is made of special aluminum that reflects the environment, causing the appearance to change constantly. Depending on the sky’s color and the direction of light, parts of the structure seem to disappear, repeatedly creating an optical illusion that recalls the urgency of “artworks that may soon vanish without residents’ attention.”

Under Depot

The Under Depot is a “room that shows what cannot be held onto,” a cube-shaped structure where smoke, light, sound, video, and performance works are screened and stored. When visitors peer through the large glass window, they experience an uncanny sense of space—as if the floor has dropped—and can view works on display. When the electronically controlled glass is switched to opaque, the space transforms into a theater capable of showing a six-meter panoramic video. The structure expands viewers’ perceptions beyond the preconception that artworks are fixed and immutable, inviting acceptance of change and disappearance as part of art.

《LOVE YOUR DEPOT_Gangnam Pavilion》 is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, organized by Gangnam-gu and the Gangnam Cultural Foundation, and supported by the Arts Council Korea. Led by principal artist Jewyo Rhii, the project involves 32 assistant artists (Park Jiho, Kim Sohyun, Lee Donghyun, Kim Jisoo, Jang Eunjin, Jeon Wookyung, Lee Sinhwoo [Team Depot artists], Seok Dasul, Kim See-eun, Jeon Woojin, Moon Boram, Lee Nuri, Lee Yanghee, Yoo Hangil, Noh Hyeri, Lee Kyunghoon, Yang Yunhwa, Lee Junho, Eom Jieun, Han Woori, Park Dasom, Kim Yeji, Eun Jaepil, Baek Jiwon, Lee Giyoung, Kim Minji [Kim Manji], Han Jihyung, Jung Yujin, Cho Eunji, Lee Hyein, Lee Ina, Park Jin), with administration by Lee Hoyoon and architectural/design collaboration by Architect Choi Seungho of Saisiot Architects.
