Minouk Lim (42) has been selected as the first recipient of the “Media Art Korea (MAK) Award,” established to introduce promising Korean media artists to international audiences.

The MAK Award committee announced on the 11th that Lim was chosen as the final winner from a shortlist of Koo Donghee, Moon Kyungwon, Park Chan-kyong, and Minouk Lim, who were selected in a first round from recommendations by a panel of five curators and art critics.

Australian media art curator Alessio Cavallaro, a member of the jury, noted: “Lim’s work possesses a compelling force that makes it impossible to look away,” adding that the jury highly valued “her critical portrayal of the transformations unfolding in Korean society.”

Supported by Byung-ki Jung, CEO of Keyang Precision, the MAK Award includes the donation of the winning work to the Asia Society Museum in New York and the publication of an artist’s book documenting the laureate’s practice, to be distributed to museums and galleries in Korea and abroad.

Kim Hong-hee, director of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and chair of the MAK Award committee, commented: “Unlike many prizes that end with a one-off cash award and little follow-up support, this prize secures a lasting global presence for Korean media artists by placing winning works in a world-class museum collection and distributing an artist’s book through international networks.”
