Alternative Space LOOP presents Byungjun Kwon’s solo exhibition 《Club Golden Flower》 from December 21, 2018 to January 27, 2019. Beyond the red curtain in the gallery are cheap androids. Swarming with grotesque, one-armed, one-eyed drifters, 《Club Golden Flower》 is an expanded, theatrically recomposed reflection—infused with the imagination and protean personae shown in his earlier works such as Draw True Drawn (2007), Six Mannequins (2011), The Wanderer’s Eyes Seeking Happiness Blaze (2011), and This is Me (2013)—on the age-old question “Who am I?”

From their repeated motions, these cold-eyed strangers who chant unknowable incantations extend a hand steeped in a tension not easily untied. Our long-standing routines of working, drinking, and dancing become strangely unfamiliar through one-armed robots that mirror one another, adding to the gloom of reality like the plaza in front of Seoul Station, where the slogans of begging and salvation, bondage and solidarity, run rampant. Their bodies, combined with ladders, achieve an elevated expansion, and site-specific sounds are provided in response to their actions.

Announcing the beginning of performances using robots, this 《Club Golden Flower》 sees Kwon reinterpret and elaborate on his previous sound works through the actions and movements of robots, sublimating light, sound, motion, and story into a total installation. Visiting hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
