Hakgojae Gallery presents a solo exhibition by media artist Yangachi, titled 《A Night of Burning Bone and Skin》, from June 20 to July 27, 2014. The exhibition title borrows from a film produced in the early 1980s as part of the military regime’s so-called “3S” policy (Sports, Sex, Screen). Drawing on the similarities between the socially manipulated landscape of the 1980s and today’s ailing society some 30 years later, the artist deliberately chose this provocative title for the exhibition.

This exhibition marks Yangachi’s first solo presentation at Hakgojae Gallery, as well as his return to the solo exhibition format after a five-year hiatus. The new works push beyond his previous projects, breaking out of established frameworks and engaging in self-deconstruction in an effort to rediscover the essential force behind his artistic practice. Through this exhibition, the artist aims to raise a socially conscious voice about the reality of a history repeating itself—one that should never be repeated—while positioning himself as a “forty-something” artist deeply engaged with the world.

As the title suggests, the exhibition also reveals the artist’s effort to visualize the sense of touch. Approximately 40 works—including three-dimensional pieces, photographs, and videos—will be on view throughout the exhibition.
