The Korean Art Critics
Association (President: Byungsoo Kim) announced on the 1st that artist Kira Kim
has been selected as the recipient of the 13th “Artist Prize by the Korean Art
Critics Association.”
The “Artist Prize by the
Korean Art Critics Association” is awarded not based on public popularity but
rather on the artist's creative career and excellence in artistic quality. The
selection process involves nominations by association members, followed by a
review by the executive committee of “Artist Prize Selection Members.” This
year’s judges included President Byungsoo Kim, and critics Jinyeob Kim and
Hyungsun Choi.
The 13th award
recipient, Kira Kim (50), has been recognized as a multifaceted artist who
transcends a wide range of genres within contemporary art—painting, sculpture,
installation, and video—while also expanding the realm of art through diverse
approaches including collaborations with artists from other disciplines such as
music, literature, and dance, as well as community-based cooperative projects.
President Byungsoo Kim
of the Korean Art Critics Association commented, “Kira Kim’s artistic practice
goes beyond painting to installation, from still images to time-based video,
and from sculpture to body-based performance. He knows how to transcend boundaries—capturing
not only space but also time. He is truly a worthy recipient of the Artist
Prize, befitting the prestige of the Korean Art Critics Association.”
Kira Kim began his
artistic career with solo exhibitions such as “Palace of Mirage” at King's Lynn
Art Centre in the UK (2006), and “Republic of Propaganda” at Alternative Space
LOOP (2008). He later held solo exhibitions at Kukje Gallery (2009), Doosan Art
Center (2012), Perigee Gallery (2014), and Artspace BOAN (2016), among others.
In 2009, he received the “Today's Young Artist Award” from the Minister of
Culture, Sports and Tourism. He was named a finalist for the “Korea Artist
Prize” by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in 2015 and
was awarded a commendation as an Outstanding Contributor to Overseas Cultural
Promotion in 2019.
In 2023, he participated
in both the 14th Gwangju Biennale and the 3rd Jeju Biennale. He also engaged in
various projects such as the global art project “Prada Mode Seoul – Banquet
Performance” by the luxury brand Prada, a solo drawing exhibition at the Hello
Museum, and the 50th anniversary exhibition at the Arko Art Center. Most
recently, he was invited to present a new work themed around Gangwon-do’s
intangible cultural heritage at the “Brilliant Stories to Save the Earth”
exhibition, part of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics & Cultural
Olympiad.
The award ceremony will
be held later this year in conjunction with a commemorative solo exhibition for
the winning artist.
