“One of the most notable works in 《The Autobiography of Hilton Seoul》 is Jung Jihyun’s photographic series ‘Fragments of the Future,’ particularly Millennium Hilton Seoul_Ballroom (2025). Capturing the demolition site of Hilton Seoul—once a symbol of Seoul’s international vitality and urban identity in the 1980s—this series reveals how the end of an architectural structure can be transformed into a new aesthetic dimension.

Jung Jihyun’s work visually testifies to the dissolution of architecture through unfamiliar landscapes exposed in the process of dismantling. Scenes of the familiar façade collapsing convey a sense of loss and shock, while simultaneously evoking an unfamiliar beauty and curiosity, functioning as a medium that recalls the life cycle of architecture and the memory of its era. In the photographs, the coexistence of the grand ballroom’s opulent chandeliers and its exposed structural framework reveals a sublime tension that lingers in the very moment of disappearance.”

An exhibition currently on view at Piknic, 《The Autobiography of Hilton Seoul》 sheds light on Hilton Seoul, one of the landmark works of modern Korean architecture. Co-organized with the architectural curatorial collective CAC, the exhibition functions as a final retrospective of Hilton Seoul, which stood at the foot of Namsan for 40 years from 1983 to 2022.

Moving beyond a mere documentation of architectural form and history, the exhibition reaches into the lived experiences and memories embedded within the space through diverse media. Bringing together a wide range of artists—including Kimm Jong Soung, Noh Songhee, Baek Yunsuk, Ziu Suh, Lim Chung-Eui, Jung Jihyun, and Choi Yongjoon—CAC curator Kim Heejung highlights the works not to be missed. The exhibition runs through January 4 of next year.
