Photographers Kwon Doyeon and Chung Heeseung have been selected as the inaugural recipients of the 1st Ralph Gibson Award.

Sponsored by the GoEun Cultural Foundation and BMW Dongsung Motors, the first winners of the Ralph Gibson Award were announced on November 3. The award was established to support photographers who are expected to lead the future of Korean photography—artists who are building a distinctive artistic world through their own unique visual language. Recipients receive opportunities such as an exhibition at one of the museums under the GoEun Cultural Foundation and the publication of a photobook.

The Ralph Gibson Award was created following the opening of the Ralph Gibson Museum of Photography last year, reflecting Gibson’s wish to contribute to the advancement of Korean photography. In an interview on the 5th, Gibson said, “The idea for the award came from Chairman Hyungsoo Kim of the GoEun Cultural Foundation,” adding, “The works of the final two candidates were both exceptional, so I selected them both as winners.”

The Ralph Gibson Museum of Photography granted full authority to Ralph Gibson to choose the awardees. From a pool of more than 500 photographers, eight were shortlisted through the first and second rounds of review, and the final two candidates were selected last September during Gibson’s solo exhibition in Munich, Germany.
Earlier this month, Gibson came to Busan to conduct in-person interviews with the finalists. Each candidate spent over an hour discussing their work with Gibson, bringing portfolios, photographic prints, and books to the meeting.

Among the awardees, Kwon Doyeon holds an MA in Photography and Imaging from Sangmyung University. He previously received the 2014 KT&G SKOPF Final Artist Award and the 2019 Ilwoo Photography Award (Publishing Division). Kwon said, “Photography teaches me an attitude toward learning—looking closely, looking again with humility—and I love that I can continue weaving stories every day.” He expressed his intention to continue using photography to understand and connect the world.

Chung Heeseung majored in Painting at Hongik University and later pursued an MA in Photography in the UK. She participated in the MMCA Artist of the Year 2020 exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Chung said, “Since my university years, I’ve drawn immense inspiration from Ralph Gibson’s photographs. I’m honored to receive this award, but above all, meeting Ralph Gibson during the selection process gave me the courage to explore the world more deeply and to travel farther with photography, reflecting on what art can do in our time.”
