The Anguk Cultural Foundation announced on the 2nd that it has selected artist Sangdon Kim as the first recipient of the Anguk Art Award, and held an award ceremony at its headquarters.

After graduating from the Meisterschüler program in Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts, Kim went on to participate in the Busan Biennale, Mediacity Seoul, and the Gwangju Biennale. As part of this award, he receives a cash prize of 20 million KRW and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition.

In their general remarks, the jurors stated that Kim’s work drew attention by introducing shamanism as an alternative method for collective catharsis. They assessed that his meticulous hand-crafted details and refined execution—qualities often overlooked in contemporary art’s tendency toward conceptual, idea-driven approaches—demonstrate new methodologies resonating with humanism and feminism.

They further noted that Kim’s pluralistic, shamanistic worldview reflects the spirit of the Gwangju Biennale, which aspires toward reconciliation between East and West and wishes for global peace. His work received praise from co-artistic directors Defne Ayas and Natasha Ginwala at the Biennale.

One of the defining features of the Anguk Art Award is its method of selecting candidates. Unlike other art prizes, candidates are neither recruited through open calls nor nominated arbitrarily by a panel of experts.

Jury Chair Kim Hong-hee stated, “We highly value the originality and significance of the Anguk Art Award, which is dedicated to Korean artists who participate in the main exhibitions of Korea’s major international biennales—Gwangju Biennale, Busan Biennale, and Mediacity Seoul.”
