The Jury of the Hermès Foundation Art Award announced on the 22nd that artist Sangdon Kim (38) has been selected as the winner of the 2011 Hermès Foundation Art Award. Kim, who has worked across photography, sculpture, video, and other genres, received the award for his video work Solveig’s Song.

The winning work consists of a video documenting scenes such as hikers climbing Bukhansan Mountain and a hardware store owner in Busan performing ‘Solveig’s Song’ using a handsaw, alongside photographs and sculptures. The jury stated that the award recognizes how “the artist presents everyday life—where noble and vulgar human desires indistinguishably coexist—from a perspective freed from convention.”

Other finalists for this year’s Hermès Foundation Art Award included Choi Wonjun and Part-time Suite. Kim receives a trophy and a cash prize of 20 million KRW, and the award-winning work will be exhibited at Atelier Hermès until October 4.
