Installation artist Kiwon Park (45) has been selected as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Artist of the Year for 2010.

Having participated as a Korean Pavilion artist in the 2005 Venice Biennale, Park is known for installation works that accept the inherent properties of a given space. His works often give the impression of functioning as integral parts of the original space itself, and are praised for their keen ability to capture spatial qualities.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art stated, “Kiwon Park’s works not only capture the intrinsic characteristics of spaces but also their historical and cultural contexts, in the artist’s unique manner, evoking inner resonance in viewers. His practice does not seek to generate dazzling discourses in provocative language or to draw market attention, but rather contributes to expanding the possibilities of contemporary art by eliciting resonance through the aesthetic potential of art.”

The exhibition introducing Park’s works as Artist of the Year will be held at the MMCA Gwacheon Main Hall in April.
